Senate Republicans are preparing to spend an extra week in Washington before the midterms as vulnerable members push party leaders for votes aimed at affordability—the issue Democrats have spent most of this Congress talking about.
“Looking that way,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters Thursday morning when asked whether the chamber would be in session next week.
The change comes with 40 days until Election Day and growing signs that the economy has become a political liability for Republicans. A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found Democrats with an eight-point advantage over Republicans on which party voters trust more to handle the economy and a 13-point advantage on gas prices. Among independents, those gaps grow to 19 and 26 points, respectively.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week found just 17 percent of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of the cost of living.
